For the past 13 years, Dr. Martelle has studied the archaeology of southern Ontario, taking an interest in both the Aboriginal and early EuroCanadian occupations of the region. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Toronto in 2002 based on her research on contact period Iroquoian populations in Southern Ontario, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. In addition to 16 years of experience in the road building and aggregate industries, Dr. Martelle was formerly employed as a Heritage Planner at the Ministry of Citizenship, Culture and Recreation (now the Ministry of Culture) and has been an Adjunct Professor at Wilfrid Laurier University, the University of Western Ontario and the University of Toronto. In the last few years, Dr. Martelle has directed numerous archaeological assessments for subdivision developments, road improvements, sewer installations, and aggregate extraction areas. She has recently been involved in the excavation of several Iroquoian villages and early 19th century pioneer homesteads in the London area. Dr. Martelle acts as an advisor to local developers and First Nations communities on burial issues and has recently assisted with the development of an archaeology course curriculum for a local school board. Dr. Martelle is an active member of the Canadian Archaeological Association and is currently editor of the association's newsletter. She is also a member of the board of directors of the Ontario Archaeological Society, and is a member of the American Anthropological Association, the Society for American Archaeology and the Association of Professional Archaeologists. Dr. Martelle has presented her work at conferences throughout Canada and the United States.
